Beginning the Journey
For everyone involved with a birth process, the journey is usually long, always eventful and occasionally difficult. This can be particularly true for survivors of abuse and those supporting them. While any trauma history is significant, the work of the Butterfly Initiative specifically focuses on improving care and outcomes for sexual abuse and assault survivors. The intersection of sexual abuse and the body centered nature of childbearing presents unique challenges; and opportunities. Without proper support survivors often find their childbearing years scary and even re-traumatising. With good support and a knowledgeable care provider the experiences of pregnancy and birth can be profoundly healing.
